Self-Harm
As for best practice, mental health professionals utilize a developmental lens regarding what type of behavior is developmentally appropriate and when parents and guardians should be concerned. Adolescents experience an array of daily school-life stressors, and often it can become overwhelming. Therefore, parents may want to participate in family therapy or individual therapy for their adolescents. The behavior of self-harm is quite pervasive, and adolescents can become dependent on it. Regrettably, these practices are unhealthy, and they are left with scars. Presently, they are relying on self-harming methods to cope and regulate overwhelming/underwhelming emotions. To alleviate symptoms in the engaging adolescent, research also supports a familial stance. While individual therapy can be effective, Dr. Knox has taken a systematic approach by integrating family therapy to foster cohesion.
Couples/Family Therapy
To help couples or families decrease relational or communicative issues, therapy is structured as a collaborative effort. The therapeutic approach is not to give advice but rather a humble position as a collaborator in facilitating the reduction of the problematic dynamic and encouraging new meaning-making and healthy communication among family members or couples. Dr. Knox's theoretical wheelhouse includes but is not limited to attachment theory, emotionally focused therapy, structural family therapy, and symbolic-experiential therapy.
Individual Therapy
Due to our demanding lifestyle or taking care of others, we inadvertently forget to take care of ourselves. Individual work is an opportunity to practice self-care, and it has the potential to impact all facets of your life in a positive way. Perhaps this is an opportunity to work on things you have been suppressing, and a licensed clinician may be the helper you need to walk with you on your journey. There is no time like the present!
Grief Work
“Mostly it is loss which teaches us about the worth of things” – Schopenhauer, 1788-1860. Regrettably, there is a physical and psychosocial effect of loss, grief, and mourning on the individual and family system. For most individuals, a common coping mechanism is to detach from the deceased. However, this coping strategy is only temporary. Mourning is regularly the reaction to the loss of a loved person and attempting to detach may not suffice. The process of mourning is a conceptual framework that considers nonlinear stages of grief work. Wherever you are in the grieving process, Dr. Knox's goal is to help you reregulate yourself after a significant loss by serving as a transitional attachment figure.
Multiculturalism
Cultural sensitivity promotes health and healing by meeting the needs of the individual and family. Cultural competence means having the ability to understand, respect, and interact with persons whose values, beliefs, and practices may be different from your own. As a multicultural psychotherapist, it is fundamental that our therapeutic alliance is built with the consideration and understanding of your culture. If you are having a hard time blending cultural differences or your values and beliefs are at odds with the ones you grew up with – reach out and schedule a session today.
